how to find your size

A common question is  "How do I find the size of my tyres?"

Finding  your tyre size is quick and easy. You can find this information on the sidewall of your tyre, as shown in the image.

This information lists the size and specification of your tyre, as well as ensuring it complies with European safety standards.

What each code section stands for:

Width - The width of the tyre in millimetres.

Profile - The height of the tyre sidewall as a percentage of the tyre width.

Wheel Size - The diameter of the tyres inner rim, in inches.

Speed Rating - The maximum recommended speed for the tyre at full load.

For example, a tyre with the code 205 / 55 R17  96W would have a tyre width of 205 millimetres, a sidewall height of 55% of the width, a 17 inch inner rim size and a speed rating of W.

unsure when to change your tyres?

The legal minimum tread depth for cars in the UK is 1.6mm throughout a continuous band comprising the central three-quarters of breadth of the tread and around its entire outer circumference. In wet weather tyre tread grooves help to remove water from the contact patch between your tyres and the road surface meaning your car can brake, steer and accelerate properly. Without adequate tread depth your tyres may not be able to perform properly in wet conditions, reducing your safety on the road. It is therefore advisable to consider replacing your tyres well before they reach the legal minimum. Furthermore, drivers whose tyres fail to comply with the minimum tread depth requirements risk a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points for each illegal tyre

WHAT IS A TYRE SPEED RATING?

A tyre speed rating shows the maximum speed a tyre is capable of safely maintaining.

When a vehicle moves at higher speeds, the wheels turn faster and more heat is generated in friction on the road. If the tyre can’t cope with this extra heat then they risk failing, which is incredibly dangerous when moving at high speeds.

The tyre speed rating indicates the top speed the tyre can support under its approved load capacity. For example, a tyre with a speed rating of H can go up to 130mph.

In knowing the tyre speed rating, you can safeguard your tyres and keep yourself safer when driving.

Where can I find my tyre speed rating?

You can find your tyre speed rating on the sidewall of the tyre. The tyre speed rating is represented by a letter at the end of a string of numbers.

The tyre speed rating is normally the final letter, found after the wheel diameter / rim size, for example 205/55R17 96W – with W being your tyre speed rating.
